Marengo crash victims identified December 16, 2016

Katie Kloess' name was misspelled in an earlier version. The two people killed in a crash near Marengo have been identified. They were Matthew J. Lange, 35, of Genoa and Katie L. Kloess, 29, of Marengo, according to McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski. (Daily Herald)

Be very careful with this funeral home. They may lack honesty, and or diligence. A year ago we lost a parent/In-Law. We used Modell because the parent's spouse was handled through them. During the arrangements ,with the owners daughter, we informed her that the Parent had changed it's mind, and instead of the full burial package, the Parent had previously decided on, the parent wanted Cremation, and a Memorial service at our Church. The Pastor had become a good friend. The Daughter worked with us on the Urn, cards and the arrangements of the remains. Yet, it appeared to us that she became preoccupied with other matters and wanted to give us over to someone else as soon as she could. On later reflection we questioned ourselves on her leaving us was due to the amount of money we were not spending. Months passed as I went through boxes of the parent's records, gotten food poisoning, and spent weeks sipping Broth and sleeping. As we did not pay in full immediately Modell put the account into collection. While recovering I spent an hour in the morning and another in the afternoon back in the boxes. Discovering, in a bundle of old Bank records, a Customer's copy of a Forethought Funeral Insurance policy written by Modell Funeral Home. I contacted Modell and the daughter answered. I told her what I had discovered, and her immediate response was how glad she was that she was not the person to have handled this. How that person should have checked the records. (She must have been doing something else when she spent over ten minutes checking, or she did find the records?, we do not know). She then asked to take care of the matter for us, for which I declined, having no confidence or trust in her or them. The story continues but the above is the essentials. I still question myself on whether or not she was diligent, or if she had found the policy. Did she have a lack of memory in handling us, or was she trying to cover herself. Did she put us in collection to further gain funds and cover themselves? What was nice, was that in the final meeting she never gave us or offer us any credit for there lack of service, Professional to the end. Oh, I forgot they messed up the cards.

I am writing on behalf of the family of deceased, Larry S Edwards. I came to Chicago, from Ohio, to attend the funeral of Larry Edwards. I accompanied my family to your facility to help with the arrangements for Larry's funeral, on several occasions. I just wanted to tell you how impressed we were with the professionalism of your entire staff. With so much involved with the loss of a loved one and then having to plan a funeral, it was so comforting to walk into your offices and leave feeling as if the funeral was one less thing we had to stress about. We felt that Gatlings would take care of not only our loved one, but our family as well. The staff at Gatlings did exactly that. Your drivers were always on time and courteous. Your entire staff were extremely well dressed. Your facility was immaculate and all of your workers were very well organized. They were also very patient, especially at the end of the funeral when everyone was saying their goodbyes to loved ones, your driver said for us to take as long as we needed. Your drivers assisted everyone in and out of the cars, they drove as if they were carrying precious cargo. We never felt rushed or as though we were an inconvenience in any way. Your office staff were extremely patient with my family members. We made several changes to the obituary after the draft had been printed. Your staff continually told us, 'We are here to do whatever you need, we'll take care of you.' Our loved one, Larry Edwards, had been very sick for a very long time. When we viewed the body, everyone kept saying how peaceful he looked and what a wonderful job Gatlings had done. We cannot thank you enough for taking care of our loved one and our family. By the time our experience with Gatlings came to an end, we felt as though we had gained a new family. Please share this letter with your employees. My friend wanted a simple no frills send off. Well I suppose that is exactly what she recieved. Parked in a corner of the basement (as in concret floor, pipes and crummy walls). She was a beautiful woman that could at times be excentric in her style. You would never have guessed that by the plane sheet that covered her. The array of headstones that were in the other corner were a nice touch, all that was missing were some spiderwebs and an errie tape in the back ground. There was not even a place to pray! I know that money plays a part, and that some people want simple but this was disrespectful. If they would donate a corner for the poor I would be willing to decorate it in memory of my friend, so no one elses family has to say good bye in such deplorable conditions.

Tews Funeral Home & Ryans Funeral Home are owned & operated by the same person, Mike Ryan. Please beware! Tews Funeral Home gave some of our sons ashes, after cremation, to people who attended the service without asking permission. We did not find this out until months later. My husband was never asked. IT WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN AUTHORIZED. One of the people who received the ashes was his x-girlfriend. We feel she is part of the reason he is not with us anymore. My husband feels so violated. After finally getting ahold of Mt. Ryan, he kept beating around the bush and would not answer. Please beware. We wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else.
